Description

Built in 1891, this Queen Anne style home is considered to be the oldest surviving house original to the Mount Pleasant area. Distinctive features include the asymmetrical façade, prominent front-facing bay window, and gable roof. The wood-frame stick-style construction used here was popularly employed between 1887-1895, linking this building to the early development of the neighbourhood.

Its first owner was Robert Moore, a teamster, after whom the house is named on the City’s Heritage Register. More commonly, the building is referred to as the Davis House in homage to the Davis family who resided here between 1973-1985. They purchased the house for $30,000 in 1973 and were independently responsible for the 1973-1975 restoration of the building. It was also the first house in the city to receive heritage status and a City of Vancouver heritage plaque in 1976.

Colloquially known as the Davis Block, the extraordinary collection of well-preserved heritage homes on the 100 block of W 10th Avenue between Manitoba and Columbia is largely due to the efforts of the Davis family. In the 1970s and 80s, John and Nita “Pat” Davis and their family purchased, restored and protected with heritage designation a succession of houses that were threatened by neglect and demolition, often converting them to multiple suites and providing long-term affordable rental accommodation. This house, along with 117, 140, 144, 148, 150, and 156 W 10th Ave are all part of this picturesque and historic block.
