Description

This 1899-1900 house displays the asymmetrical massing of the Queen Anne style, but also has the formality and detailing of the Edwardian Builder style. The square porch column and balusters are an early example of what was to become typical in the Edwardian Era.

The Bloomfield Studio forms a cluster with its neighbour, 2544 Columbia Street, commonly known as the Bloomfield Residence. Henry Bloomfield, a stained glass artist from England, was the original owner of both addresses. He and his two sons operated the family’s stained glass business, Bloomfield & Sons, out of the studio building while living in the adjacent residence. Several of his exceptional windows were installed in this house, which was also for a time his studio.

Henry Bloomfield established BC’s first art glass studio in New Westminster in 1890. He moved to Vancouver in 1898 with his two sons, Charles and James and they lived and worked here. James (Bloomfield) went on to have his own distinguished career as a stained glass artist. His local work includes St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Gabriola Mansion and the design of the City of Vancouver coat of arms used 1903-69.
