Description
Designed by E.S. Mitton and built in 1912 by H.D. Crawford, this wood frame house was originally a farm house. It is now one of the few remaining original houses in the area.
This 2 ½ storey house exhibits some aspects of the Craftsman Style that flourished on the West Coast from approximately 1910-1925. It also displays some Arts and Crafts influence, most notably its inset verandah and projecting bellcast shingled front upper storey. The main body of the house is clad in bellcast narrow wood siding, the front door is original and multi-paned. Double-hung windows enhance the heritage character. 2919 E 29th Avenue has undergone restoration in the form of repairs to the front porch (2010) and roof replacement (2016) with the help of a VHF Restore It grant. In 2000 and 2009, the house was repainted to its original colours with help from a VHF True Colours grant.
The architect, Edward Stanley Reeve Mitton (1880-1953) was born in Birmingham England. He worked in Birmingham, Winnipeg, and Toronto before starting his own office in Vancouver in 1908, and a branch office in Victoria in 1911. Mitton practiced in Vancouver until 1914, whereupon he appears to have returned to England. Whilst in Vancouver, he staged an ‘exhibition of domestic arts’ depicting many of his own designs for cottages, bungalows, and residences in Vancouver.
