Possibly built as early as 1912, this house first appears in city directories in 1922, as 5823 George Street. George Street was renamed St. George Street from 1908 onwards. Despite this, the house remained listed under ‘George Street’ until 1931, when it is began being listed as ‘St. George Street’.

The first listed resident of 5823 [St.] George Street was Walter Mitchell, a constable for the Vancouver City Police. Walter retired around 1942. He lived at the house with his wife Agnes from at least 1922 until at least 1955.

Canadian poet Pat Lowther lived in the house from 1963-1967.
