Description

837 West 7th Avenue was likely built between 1905-1910, and first appears in city directories in 1910. The first listed resident was George W. Mitchell, an employee at Barber Mattress Corporation. The house saw several long term occupancies, the first by Thomas Richardson, a carpenter who lived in the house from 1919-1927.

From 1930-1948, the house was occupied by members of the Funnell family. Mrs. Henrietta Funnell, a widow and maid at the Vancouver General Hospital, moved into the house in 1930. Other members of the family who lived at the house at various periods included Hetty Funnell, a waitress and later maid at the Vancouver General Hospital, Lawrence Funnell, a cleaner at the hospital, Roy Funnell, who was a messenger and later a welder, and Richard Funnell, who worked at a cannery.
