Description

The Clark House, built in 1888, is generally considered to be one of the oldest surviving houses in Vancouver. The house is one-storey wood frame house constructed in a Queen Anne cottage architectural style with typical massing, façade development and detailing.. The house is indicative of early working class housing in Mount Pleasant.Cedar drop-siding, decorative shingling, and geometric lattice to the verandahs provide some architectural enhancement for the basic cottage form. The first owner was Thomas W. Clark, a produce and commission merchant in Gastown.

The house was originally located at 243 E 5th Avenue but disassembled and reconstructed in its present location (behind Macauley House) in 2004. The two principal facades, decorative gable, cedar drop-siding, and window frames were retained and the front verandah was replicated exactly from period photographs in its original configuration and relationship to the house.
